Fallout: Arsenal

Episode #1: Mysteries of Vault 45

Life in Vault 45 hasn’t been too bad, all things considered. I mean, the 300-some vault dwellers could have been above ground when the bombs fell in 2077.

It’s now 2292, and there have been several generations of people living in the vault. Among them are the uncharacteristic protagonists of this tale.

Among this group is a cagey reporter named Masa Lin. He works for the Vault Overseer Alanna Ford, but behind the scenes he’s working on exposing the truths within the vault, no matter how grand or small.

Jobe Buchanan is your typical Vault-Tec guard. He patrols where he’s told. He puts in his daily hours of training. Then he goes home to live with his mother, Rosemary Buchanan, and live a quiet life.

Another soldier, a not-so-typical guard named Rick Foley, is the result of an experiment gone wrong. He was experimented on as part of an FEV experiment that went wrong. Thankfully, the serum did not turn him into a Super Mutant, but he is much more enhanced than the average soldier. He serves as one of the more able bodies of First Sergeant Aaron Matthews.

We begin with Masa Lin receiving a large number of rumors on his personal terminal. They included…

  • A rash of strange sicknesses as of late, ranging from dehydration to abdominal pains.
  • A sit-in concerning a lack in workers’ yearly wages. The wages aren’t going up it seems due to the use of more robots to do human work.
  • A crazier resident claims to have seen a mole rat sneaking around the duct work and stealing his food rations.
  • One of the sick citizens overheard someone talking about a “supply run,” which is something foreign given the vault has never been opened since The Great War.

Aside from those rumors, everyone receives the following two messages:

  • There is a meeting to be held tonight, and everyone must attend. It concerns the occupancy of the Vault and needed regulations.
  • In a week, the vault will be celebrating the 20 year anniversary for the current Overseer Alanna Ford.

The players all meet at a judo class taught by Masa. The lesson goes overly well for Jobe, who unexpectedly out-performs the jacked up Rick.

After their lesson, Rick and Jobe report for duty for the big announcement. Masa decides this is the best chance he has to sneak into his aunt Michiko Lin’soffice down in the medical wing and see about the rumors of the sicknesses.

During the vault meeting, Underseer Michael Lawson is forced to deliver bad news to the angry crowd of vault dwellers. The capacity of the Vault, which stands at 350, has been exceeded. A new law is laid down stating that there is to be a stop to births. Obviously this makes the crowd a bit unruly, and there is a moment where First Sergeant Aaron Matthews intimidates the crowd into quieting.

After the meeting, Rick follows a group of protesters, led by a woman with a “I want to see the manager haircut” Claire Barnes, and he manages to cool down the situation before they can plan anything drastic. He also checks in with R.J. Dios, a trusted superior in the guard. He talks about how First Sergeant Aaron Matthews acted and wanted to make sure the people stay safe.

Meanwhile, Masa is sneaking through the duct work and gets distracted by a strange noise. He snaps a photo of…a mole rat?! Intrigued, he follows the gross bugger and almost ends up tumbling to his death when the tunnel comes to an end. Here he hears a terrible squealing sound. Unable to see, he takes a picture, and the photo shows hundreds of shining red eyes.

When he backs away, he accidentally loses his way and crashes through the duct work into the medical area where he wanted to be. Here he’s helped up by Michiko Lin, who reprimands him for his foolishness.

Jobe realizes that Masa was not at the mandatory meeting, so he decides to head to his room. He manages to break into his living quarters, and he finds a secret room filled with different articles and photographs. Jobe begins digging around for something, but he does not seem to find what he’s looking for.

And that’s where the story ends…for now.

Episode #2: I Smell a Mole Rat...

Jobe Buchanan sneaks out of Masa Lin’s room, leaving things fairly as they were. When Masa returns, he does not notice anything out of the ordinary. He checks his messages and found one from Jimmie Fletcher, the head of supplies for Vault 45. They set up a meeting for later that day.

Meanwhile, Ivy Monroe is awakened by one of the other farmers. She finds that many of her pigs have been brutally slaughtered. The farmer sends for the Vault-Tec security, and it’s Jobe that is called in. They find a trail that leads back toward some of the technology in the lower level of the vault. There’s some sort of small opening between two sets of the machines.

They decide to take one of the pigs to the head doctor Michiko Lin. She’s confused and grossed out by this, and she says she’ll do what she can and that they should check back later. Ivy goes back home and finds that some of her finest dresses have been stolen and torn up.

When Jobe goes back home, he finds that his mother has fallen ill. He seems more annoyed by this than anything, and once she starts vomiting, he begrudgingly takes her to the doctor.

Masa and Jimmie meet up at his room, and Jimmie is tweaking badly and freaking out. The death of the pigs is falling on his head, and the Overseer Alanna Ford is ready to punish him harshly. He asks Masa for help, and he does so but wants frag grenades in exchange. Jimmie says he’ll get on that, leaves, and comes back with three of them. Masa tells Jimmie to stay put and that he’ll take care of everything. “Taking care of everything” means going back into his crawl space and tossing a grenade where he found the mole rat eyes.

Cue a giant explosion, and everyone freaking the hell out. Jobe drops off his mother and rushes to the 3rd level. Rick Foley shows up to investigate as well. There is a huge explosion near the machinery, and it reveals an opening. Masa and Ivy join them, and they eventually crawl through. What they find is a path leading to a massive steel door and a terminal. With a bit of quick work, they break the code and open the doorway into a massive warhead storage facility. They find several old nuclear bombs.

They also find mole rats. They fight one off and then discover someone or something in some scaffolding near one of the warheads. With a bit of quick climbing, Rick makes it up to the top to find a ghoul dressed in bright colors with a fife and surrounded by mole rats.

He introduces himself as Hamelin, and he says he once worked in this area. When things went south, he was forced to stay here. He’s lived out over fifty years in this area, where he rotted away into a ghoul. He befriended the mole rats to stay alive, and they have been scavenging food.

The party actually befriends him and convince him to come with them back into the Vault. When they emerge, they find a huge crowd and the familiar voice of First Sergeant Aaron Matthews himself showing up.

Episode 3: Welcome to the Wasteland

Things don’t start out well for our heroes. As they crawl back out into the lowest level of Vault 45, they realize that there is a large group of soldiers and the head of the security, First Sergeant Aaron Matthews. He commands Jobe Buchanan and Rick Foley to do their job and arrest the strange ghoul Hamelin.

They both straight out refuse. As things escalate, Enzo, who got more than a little defiant, and Hamelin are put in cuffs. Rick begins to challenge Sergeant Matthews’s motives and bravery, which leads to a final threat to comply to his orders or else.

When things look like they couldn’t get any worse, Jobe decides to put his gun to Matthews’s head. Things get rather tense, and before too long, Jobe fires and drops the Sergeant with a bullet right through the brain.

The crowd panics, and some of the guards react by trying to subdue the crew. Ivy Monroe and Hamelin crawl back through the opening, and they can’t seem to find Masa Lin. As they escape, the other three end up fighting and killing the Vault-Tec Security. Once they do, they also go through the tunnel.

They end up back in the hallway leading to the room of nuclear missiles. Masa climbed back up the scaffolding where they had discovered Hamelin. He had a plan…not a great plan, but a plan none-the-less. He climbed up the nuclear warhead toward the small opening to The Wasteland. There he took one of his remaining frag grenades, tied some rope to the pin, and tried to pull it from a distance and break a way open.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, and he actually pulled the whole grenade down and accidentally fell onto the scaffolding and was severely injured. Ivy and Hamelin rushed to help him.

Meanwhile, Rick, Jobe, and Enzo debated what to do as they could hear people trying to head down the hole they had uncovered. They decided to try and cover the opening somehow. Enzo rushed to the computer terminal, where he managed to hack into the Vault’s systems. Instead of just turning the terminal into an explosive, he actually managed to launch the nuke that Masa had once climbed.

Everyone freaked out and made a mad dash for the missile. The hatch above it had opened, and they had a short window to escape. Miraculously, they all get out of the Vault and watch, all exhausted, as the nuclear warhead soared off to supposedly target Beijing, China.

They found themselves in a barren landscape with a series of broken-down buildings. The quiet of the scene was soon broken as they heard voices and footsteps approaching. They started up and noticed massive, bulking humanoids with green skin. They start to run, but eventually they stop to fight. After a tough battle, the six manage to kill three of the green-skinned men.

The group manages to gather inside a somewhat standing building and head to the upper level. There they notice a group of these beasts gathering and checking each house.

What will our party do to survive? Find out next time!

Episode 4: An Explosive Encounter

The party finds themselves stuck inside the Arsenal Training Building. As Jobe Buchanan, Masa Lin, and Enzo “Little Boy” Lorenzo stare out the window at the Protectron fighting with the Super Mutants, Rick Foley, Ivy Monroe, and Hamelin search the room for things to defend themselves with. Confused by all she’s found, Ivy ends up accidentally shooting Rick in the chest with a laser rifle.

The tone of the room changed from amusement to horror as Rick fell, smoke rising from his mouth and chest. The party didn’t know what to do, so they tried their best to comfort Rick. Enzo rushed off to find something to help heal him, but he was forced back upstairs at the sound of four super mutants roaming around the first floor.

The party ready themselves for what is to come. Masa hides in the ceiling and plants his final frag grenade in the door. Hamelin and Ivy both try to hide, Hamelin more successfully. Enzo creates an explosive device out of some of the technology of the Protectron charging station. He moves over to Jobe and realizes that Rick has passed away. Not upset by this, Enzo crams the explosive into the open chest cavity of Rick. Working together, Jobe and Enzo drag Rick’s body across the hall and set it up to catch the attention of one of the super mutants.

Hearing voices, both Jobe and Enzo hide in two of the classrooms. Enzo breaks into one of the rooms and finds a strange electronic pod. Needing a place to hide, he hopped inside, and the machine closed him in and activated. Jobe, unsure where to go, hid behind the door of the same room.

A group of four super mutants and a mutant dog come up the stairs. The dog finds Rick’s body, and two super mutants go over, turn the body over, and trigger the detonator. The dog and one of the super mutants are blown to bits (along with Rick’s body), and the other that survived stumbled back into the door and the frag grenade, setting it off as well.

The remaining two super mutants engage the party, but some laser blasts, claws to the eyes, and a slice across the throat spell a quick end to the super mutants.

Masa ends up saving Enzo from the machine giving him an injection of the FEV formula. Hamelin stumbles into another classroom and finds a hidden stash of chems. And then there’s Jobe, who cooks up the bodies of the super mutants and the dog.

Ivy inspects a computer terminal and realizes that those that survived the nuclear blast did experiments on their own men to create super soldiers with the FEV formula. Unfortunately, the formula turned many of the soldiers into super mutants.

Enzo manages to hack into the security system and develop a way to scan cameras across Arsenal Island. He finds two possible ways out: the northwest bridge toward Davenport, Iowa and a small marina at the south end of the island.

Where will our heroes go next? Will they survive the onslaught of the brutal super mutants? Find out next time!
